A Summary of Eternal Roots in the News and the Community

SD Voyager Magazine

SD Voyager Magazine, which features entrepreneurs in the San Diego region, did a cool feature on Eternal Roots this month. It shares the story of how the custom documentary process began and how it evolved in the last two years.

March 2018 - RootsTech

Picture
Eternal Roots had a booth at RootsTech 2018 from Feb. 28 - March 3. This is an annual conference and expo for people who are passionate about genealogy.

I had way too many supplies and booth content to make air travel feasible, so I loaded up my car and drove from San Diego to Salt Lake City. In the winter. I'll publish a detailed  summary of the expo on the Blog soon, but this was a fun opportunity to become acquainted with the genealogy community. Most of my interview clients struggle to recall their ancestry beyond their grandparents, but this crowd can proudly recall their heritage for hundreds of years.

It was a great learning experience, I met a ton of people, had fun exploring the city and I would be happy to return next year. You can learn more about RootsTech here.

October 2017 - 1000 Speakers Academy Live

Eternal Roots was hired as the official videographer for the first annual 1000 Speakers Academy Live in San Diego in October 2017. This is a 3-day conference with live presentations covering different angles on improving and monetizing your public speaking opportunities. I created promotional videos leading up to the event, and I recorded every speaker on stage. I created a series of sizzle videos for some of the speakers. Here is a sample.

September 2017 - Channel 6, Laguna Woods

The local TV station in the Laguna Woods community of Orange County invited me over for a live interview about the Eternal Roots origin story. The interviewer, Ken Goldberg, asked great questions about the process and the customer experience. I'm used to being the interviewer, so it's fun having the table turned and becoming the interview subject.

April 2017 - Bold Moves Podcast

Picture
I was interviewed by Mandie Mutchie on her Bold Moves Podcast. She asked probing questions, had great follow up, and she's an engaging interviewer. I shared my backstory, showcased my products, and we had a lively discussion about personal development and overcoming fear to live boldly.

March - May 2017 - San Diego County Bar Foundation

I am honored to be working with the San Diego County Bar Foundation in conjunction with its Distinguished Lawyer Memorial. This is an annual ceremony where distinguished attorneys who passed away the year prior are permanently inducted into the DLM exhibit at the County Courthouse. (Pictured.) I am creating memorial videos for each of the 6 attorneys being inducted, and have been interviewing family members, friends and colleagues. It's been an amazing experience. I will write a detailed article about it on the blog when I'm done.

February 2017 - Pathe Magazine

I prepared a Do It Yourself Series, educating people on how to create their own custom documentary, and it is being picked up in Pathe Magazine. The DIY series is dense and will be spread over multiple issues in the magazine. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to work with such a great group of people.

January 2017 - Raw & Real Podcast with Chris Ripka

I was introduced to podcaster Chris Ripka through Dave Daley. Chris is influential in the podcaster community and it took me a few months to book a show with Chris, but it was worth the wait. Chris wanted to discuss my story about how a psychic predicted - 19 years ago - that one day I would make documentaries about humanity. When I began sharing the story (at the 4:20 mark), the lights in my office went out, so I told the story in the dark. When I finished the story the lights came back on!

January 2017 - Positive Transformation Network

I was interviewed on the Positive Transformation Network podcast. I got to share the story about how this project began, and how it has evolved over time. Kellie Fitzgerald is a wonderful interviewer and I really felt at home on her show. There are some amazing interviews in the archives here. Kellie also publishes Pathe Magazine, and Eternal Roots will be featured in the next edition.

January 1, 2017 - San Diego Union Tribune

The SDUT ran a feature on Eternal Roots in the New Years Day edition. They did an excellent job capturing the essence of the project and the value people receive from recording their family histories. Here is a link to the article.

December 2016 - TheShaneTrain

I've been interacting with an amazing community of people on Facebook lately, and many of them are live video pioneers. One such pioneer is Shane de Garay, aka TheShaneTrain. Shane has a live interview format similar to Dave Daley (below), but instead of live sitdowns, Shane uses Facebook video messaging. He does this with two phones, one phone makes the call while the other livestreams the call. It was a really fun interview with a lot of viewer interaction. Shane always inspires me to take action and he always has a positive message. Here is a link to the interview. Follow Shane here.

November 2016 - Monster Motivator TV

This month I had the opportunity to appear on Dave Daley's Monster Motivator program. Dave's show is raw and unscripted, and broadcast live on Facebook, then placed on YouTube. Dave flipped the script and had me share my life story before we got into how this project started. I'll share more detail about this experience soon on my blog, but the full video is embedded below.

November 2016 - County Bar Event

I sponsored a continuing legal education event for the Estate Planning and Elder Law sections of the San Diego County Bar Association. I had a vendor table right next to the buffet, so you had to see me while getting your breakfast. The attorneys in attendance instantly grasped the importance of this project, and expressed interest in the service for themselves as well as their clients.

November 2016 - Ranch & Coast Magazine

I was very fortunate to be given a full-page feature in the November 2016 edition of Ranch & Coast Magazine. I met with a deputy editor to discuss this project. The table was turned and I found myself being the interviewee. She asked some questions I did not see coming, and she really understood the magnitude and value of the project, both for the interview subjects and their families.

October 8, 2016 - Successful Aging Expo

I was looking forward to this event for a long time. The San Diego Union Tribune annually hosts the Successful Aging Expo at the Town & Country Convention Center in Mission Valley. I attended this event back in April, just after launching this website. I networked the room and met a ton of people. The Expo returned in October, and I pounced on the opportunity to be an exhibitor. My wife worked the table with me. It was really fun interacting with the public and seeing their responses to my project. My wife, who is a graphic designer and expo veteran, decked out our table. We really stood out from the sea of vendors, and the visual effect really brought people in. One lesson learned the hard way - never leave out cups full of pens!

July 2016 - Vista Senior Center

I sponsored a weekly Bingo event at the Vista Senior Center. About 50 people attended, and I distributed prizes around the room. Each winner would get a CVS gift card (purchased by me), taped to an Eternal Roots brochure. I was a bit stunned by the introduction the activity director gave. She told the room they had a unique sponsor that week, and they needed to pay attention to my presentation. It was a fun opportunity to share my project with the community.
